Oh, Baby - 24 Week Update

Baby Updates

This baby is getting pretty big and I like it! This week, baby is getting hair on his or her head and, while all the major body parts are formed, everything is developing and preparing the baby for life outside of my belly. It’s a tough spot to know the baby needs to stay in there for a while and keep growing and being SO excited to just meet the baby already!

Oh, Baby - 23 Week Update

In not so exciting baby updates, I had a horrible appointment at my 24 week appointment this week. I am going to write a post about it because it is a great followup to my Gestational Diabetes Test Alternatives post (my most popular post, by far) and I imagine many other women have had similar experiences. During my first pregnancy, I opted out of the glucose screening (the 1-hour test) and instead chose to test my own blood sugar four times a day for two weeks. My midwives are totally on board with me doing this again for my second pregnancy, but I had to see a new doctor at the practice this week because my midwife had a family emergency. I knew we would discuss when I should start measuring my blood sugar at this appointment, so when the doctor asked when I wanted to schedule the glucose screening I told her I wouldn’t be taking it and was going to take my own blood sugar levels instead.

I was met with quite a bit of resistance and she basically tried to bully me into taking the test. I still refused, but if I hadn’t done so much research on the subject and already felt comfortable with my decision, I’m sure I would have given in and not stood my ground. After that, we didn’t talk much and the appointment was over pretty quickly. All that to say, this is exactly why I love my midwives. They are very laid back and if you are having a normal pregnancy, they don’t treat pregnancy like a medical problem or disease.

I enjoy the process of taking my own blood sugar because it helps me learn how my body reacts to different foods and gives a much more realistic picture of my insulin sensitivity. I’ll be posting more about this soon, along with my self-experiment findings! I really want to share this because we all need to be able to trust our mama instincts and don’t accept everything doctors (or midwives…or anyone for that matter) says as fact if we aren’t comfortable with it. You can always get a second opinion. Outside of an emergency, you can always go home and do your own research before making a decision. You are going to be making a lot of decisions for yourself and your baby as time goes on and you always need to know what you are saying “yes” or “no” to.

Weight Gained

Oops, forgot to weigh myself again.

Exercise

I have been doing a lot more walking and yoga now that my back pain is easing up a bit. I still have to take it pretty easy so things don’t flare back up. I haven’t tried any other workouts, but I may try a light prenatal workout this week. I just really don’t want to push it. I miss exercise, but it’s just not worth it.

Pregnancy Symptoms

Nothing major, but I am having some wicked acne on my chin. I feel like a high-schooler! 🙂 I’ve tried a few things to clear it up, which made it worse, so now I am trying to just leave it alone and see if that helps. I am going to the dermatologist this week to see what else I could be doing, so I’ll report back.

Food Aversions

None, really. I have had a few, but they are mostly to things I never eat anyway. Like anything really carby and sugary just sounds horrible–donuts, cakes, etc. I had a piece of cookie cake a few weeks ago and I felt sick the rest of the day.

Food Cravings

Ice cream. Always ice cream. 🙂

Sleep

For the most part, I have a good handle on the sleep thing. This week was a different story, however. We went camping with my sister’s family and sleeping in a tent while pregnant was not enjoyable. I just basically laid on one side until I was so sore I had to turn over. I didn’t get much sleep, but it was still so much fun to get out and go camping. Avery made his first s’more!

Looking Forward to

This is a little far out, but with all the fun things we’ve been doing with Avery lately (Disney, camping, etc.), I am really excited to do all of these things when we add another baby to the mix. I can’t wait for family vacations and getting to experience all of those “firsts” again with our son or daughter. 🙂

No. Unless I am not remembering them, I’ve had hardly any baby dreams.

Any Baby Movement?

A bunch! I don’t know what that baby is doing to me in there, but it feels like he (or she) must be having a party somtimes!
